I had a chance to roll out some Astra Militarum against Necrons again this week. Once again, my stoic Inquisitor rolled out to face the Xenos threat. Unfortunately things didn’t quite go to plan, and despite advancing rapidly and taking control of important objectives, the fickle winds of the Maelstrom of War mission meant objectives didn’t always mean victory! Final score was 9-7 to the Necrons.
The mission set up was diagonal split, and I deployed first. Foolishly, I left my inquisitor on the left flank, and I was counter deployed against, taking most of the easier to kill units away from my tooled up retinue of awesome.
The new Necrons really are resilient. With the new Reanimation protocols rules, I just couldn’t fire enough weapons into the squads to bring them down.
Once the Overlord arrived with his supercharged body guard of Lychguard and a Cryptek, I couldn’t stop the avalanche of living metal from overwhelming my lines.
The Overlord caught my Commander in combat, and proceeded to cleave him in twain in a challenge, that, and the final object grab by the Necrons sealed victory.
The game ended on Turn 5, which meant the the Inquistor fell short of facing his nemesis in glorious combat. Curses!
Despite their unrealistic use in a real list, my Ogryns once again proved resilient and a fantastic tar pit, bogging down two units.
It was in the end a very close game, but I just couldn’t keep those Necrons down, and I struggled to seize ground when I needed to for Objective cards. One day, the Ordo Xenos’ mission to halt the implacable advance of these Metallic souless automatons will succeed!
